Collateralized loan obligations (CLOs) are robust, opportunity-rich debt instruments that have been around for more than 35 years. And while they’re well established, they’re also complex enough that even sophisticated investors may hesitate to dig into the details – and end up missing out on their potential benefits.

CLOs have been gaining wider prominence in markets in recent years, and it’s no surprise why: Beyond the fact that the CLO market is now too big to ignore, at over $1.6 trillion,1 the asset class has historically offered a compelling combination of above-average yield and potential appreciation. But for many investors, the basics of how CLOs work, the benefits they can provide and the risks they pose are wrapped in complexity – which is why they can be misconstrued by the financial media and even some market participants.

Nonetheless, we believe CLOs are attractive investments that are well worth the effort required to understand them.
